TIPS

Watch those engine revs!

Our number one tip is to ensure that you avoid over reving your Celica's engine; especially the VVTL-i.  Although the Yamaha developed unit is extremely solid, the selection of the wrong gear can create excessive loads that may be too much for it.  The most common cause of premature engine failure that we've heard about is caused by the selection of too low a gear at high speeds; for example if you're on the rev limit in third gear and incorrectly select second when going for fourth, then the momentum of the car can take the engine over its rev limit and snap the timing chain with disastrous consequences.

Also avoid running your engine right up to the rev limiter as some users have reported premature gearbox failure caused by the sudden loss of power when the rev limiter kicks in.  Remember that until your engine has warmed up the rev limiter kicks in around 6000 rpm to prevent you going into variable valve lift mode with a cold engine.

 Take care of your sunroof!

The sunroof on UK spec vehicles is made of a special polymer rather than glass.  Whilst this performs well, and is considerably lighter than glass, it can scratch if not cared for.  Toyota recommend that you use plenty of water to rinse off dirt particles when cleaning the sunroof, and also avoid contact from any sharp objects.

Keep your paint clean.

Clean your vehicle regularly to keep the paintwork in good condition.  Clean any bird droppings off immediately to avoid permanent stains, and repair stone chips to avoid rust spots developing.  Toyota thoughtfully provide a tin of colour matched paint with every car.

Check your tire pressures regularly.

Badly inflated tires can significantly affect the handling of any car, but the consequences will be particularly significant on a car with low profile tyres.  Over or under inflated tyres will also wear out more quickly.
